I recently stayed at a hotel with a prime location that made exploring the area very convenient. The proximity to key attractions and amenities was a major plus. However, the overall experience was just okay. While the location was excellent, the hotel itself didn't quite meet my expectations in terms of comfort and service. It’s a decent option if you're looking for a central place to stay, but don't expect anything extraordinary.

There was a lack of charging points in the room. Indeed most seemed to have been blanked off. There was an unusual circular stain in the bed.
Despite the grandeur of the building the breakfast area was organised more like a school canteen.

The garden at the front is lovely, beautiful citrus smell when you walk through it in the evening. Also the Italian barman was most pleasant, sadly forgot his name. The hotel itself was relatively clean and the location is a 5 minute walk from the beach. On the top floor you do get a sea view (just about) but any lower and you probably don't.
The AC was pretty poor, it didn't matter what setting it was on it was the same, we flagged this up with reception on our first morning and they said they'd get maintenance to look at it, however we came back in the evening and they said someone had looked at it and it was now sorted, yet there was no difference...
Worse is to come...
The shower head holder in our bathroom was cracked which meant that the shower head sat loosely, unfortunately when you have a shower and turn the pressure differently this caused the shower head to fall out. It happened to me twice narrowly avoiding hitting me, however my wife was less fortunate and the shower head hit her on the head at the end of her shower causing swelling. So off we went to reception to tell them about the problem, just wanting it fixed and again they said they'd get maintenance to have a look and sort it for us. The next day we came back and the shower had not been fixed, it was still cracked. Now this was taking the mick after our experience earlier in the week so we went back down to reception to ask what was going on.
They insisted that maintenance had gone in and nothing was wrong, I then proceeded to show them pictures and a video of the problem and they then claimed that actually maintenance had gone to the wrong room after all. Fine, i'll take that excuse at face value but then they said it wouldn't be fixed until the next day (the day we were leaving) so we asked to speak to the director. Mr Bourdan was perfectly pleasant to our face, except the points when he and the receptionist were talking in French and laughing and joking about the situation, and i calmly explained that they need better practices in place to catch these problems because if this shower head had hit someone on the head in the wrong way then there are potentially serious consequences and that is negligence.

Parking lot is designed for French cars, and makes no difference between large and small cars. Some spaces are big enough for larger vehicles, would be good if they had different spaces for diff sized cars.
Bar closes at 22h00 (in August and hotel was fully booked!). Night staff gentleman was very rude in explaining this to me. When I asked for ice and a bottle of water he refused to help (despite standing behind the bar). Very rude gentleman who ruined the evening for us. How is it possible to not be able to buy a bottle of water?

The building and the garden are beautiful and I can only imagine what the grand hotel must have been like a few decades ago. The location of the hotel is great - close to the beach and the old centre. And Menton itself is a great place to stay - much cozier than Monaco and Nice, and the surrounding mountains are stunning. I found public transportation to be good and sufficiently frequent and it was easy to explore other areas from here (Monaco, Cap Martin (coastal path!), Castellar on the hills, Italian border).
I understand the hotel will be renovated in mid 2025 and the drawings shown in the lobby looked very promising.
Everything inside the hotel and past the lobby was very outdated.
I was on the ground floor - the floors felt like hospital floors, the room was small, the bathroom was outdated, there was no mini fridge (but I also don't think anyone claimed there is one), I had to move the TV off of the desk so that I could do some work at the desk, the room was opposite of the ground floor toilets and I could hear people using those toilets on a regular basis and 24/7. The hotel was frequented by lots of old people; they walked along the ground floor and spoke with each other at 7am and I could hear every word loud and clear. I like open windows, but didn't want to leave the terrace door open because of a cat strolling around and rats (I did not see any on the property, but as with any European town/city, there were some on the streets). Might all be a bit better on an upper floor.
The breakfast is also far off from what I had envisaged from the photos. The breakfast room itself was furnished with so little love, even though again, in its olden grand hotel days, the room must have been quite grand itself. The breakfast buffet was relatively big, but there was not one single thing that was really nice.

The location
When I checked in, the room was not clean. As soon as we noticed, I made a complaint at the front desk, and the response was that there was no one available to clean it. I then requested to change rooms, but they told me there were no rooms available.
The next morning, I made the same complaint to a different person, and they managed to get me a new room. Also on two occasions, the room was not cleaned, and when we asked about it, the response was that there were too many guests, and that’s why our room wasn't cleaned.

There was available garage for our car. Room was not a prestige, but it was nice, renovated and clean. Very good choice for a ‘low budget’ hotel. Staff was friendly. And also Menton city is nice. I chose the Orangeraie based on the attractive photo of the tree filled gardens and the reasonable price for a de luxe room and breakfast. The staff were helpful but the gardens were closed off as a construction site. The room and breakfast were good.
The building itself appears to be a large modernised sanatorium with long wide corridors and a huge dining area like a canteen. But the choice for breakfast was good.Our TV didn’t work and wasn’t fixed during the stay.

No warning when booking that there is serious building work going which was right in front of my garden view and workman standing in front of patio doors
Mostly building work and no sound proofing in between rooms. Shower which was small had fabric curtain. Why was the building work when has been going on for some time not mentioned on booking.com. I checked out a day early and stayed at another hotel. Dreadful my friend had blood Staines on her bathroom radiator

It's a good location just on the edge of the center of town. The breakfast buffet was pretty good, with wine on tap through a dispensing machine. On-site parking.
The hotel doesn't really live up to the way it is shown in photographs. The rooms are OK, but without basic amenities like a fridge or a kettle, the bathroom we had left a lot to be desired (out of date fixtures, a smelly plastic shower curtain that was too short and left the tiny bathroom very wet after each shower). Our triple room felt pretty tight and in general there was a sense that the place could really use a facelift. I think had we been charged half of what we paid, we would have been quite happy. But I don't think it delivers for the price point charged.

The hotel is just a short walk from the city center. We left our car in the hotel parking lot and enjoyed exploring Menton. The hotel has a beautiful garden and is very nicely decorated, both inside and out. The young gentleman at the reception was kind and professional.
We didn’t mind that there was no internet in the room due to a temporary issue the hotel was having — only the area around the reception and the garden had Wi-Fi. That didn’t spoil our impression at all, as everything else was perfect. The room was clean and modern, and breakfast was varied and good. We even enjoyed a concert with French chansons that evening when we checked in. Thank you for a short but truly unforgettable stay.

Wonderful experience right from the arrival. The 19th century architecture is just good to look at.
Professional staff, perfect location, beautiful park-garden.
The breakfast was everything you could hope for. And than some.
The closest beach is not five minutes.
We couldn't choose a more stylish hotel to stay in the wonderful town of Menton.
