This is a really nice hotel with the main building maintaining plenty of character with some original features kept. The hotel would have got top scores across the board but for the 1st room we booked in the main hotel being really small, clean and tidy and comfortable but really small. We were fortunate enough to be able to pay an upgrade fee half way through our weeks stay and move across the road to one of the hot tub suites on offer at this hotel. The extra room and the hot tub were much needed therapy for my arthritis !! The staff were very helpful and accommodating in arranging this for us and were overall excellent in the way in which they conducted themselves and went about they're day to day business. The room service was excellent too with the room (and later the suite) being cleaned every day to a very high standard. The hotel also houses a very nice and friendly bar area which I found very relaxing with great service. Although we eat out every night of our stay in Windermere at the many eateries Windermere has to offer on the high street just a 2 minute walk from the hotel, the restaurant was lovely and did serve up a wonderful selection of food for breakfast and everything cooked to a very high standard. One of the main things my partner and I needed from this weeks break was to have a nice relaxing, stress free week away from our every day life and re charge the batteries so to speak. This hotel and the overall experience provided from the staff gave us exactly that and was everything we needed from this break. Will definitely be looking to return in the not too distant future to this hotel and fully book the hot tub suite next time.

The Applegarth is exceptional you wouldn’t believe the suite we stayed in had been used before it was immaculate like brand new. The staff and owners went above and beyond my expectations to make our stay as perfect as it could be. We had difficulty arranging a taxi to a bar and the lovely owners wife took us in her own car and dropped us right at the bar. I really can’t wait for my next visit. If you like luxury definitely try this place I would rate it six stars if I could. It it immaculate.

From the moment we arrived they made us feel so welcome. They put all their customers first. The staff are all so lovely and very friendly and welcoming. The chef wow from the breakfast to the evening meal was absolutely sensational. Windermere is right on the doorstep and Bowness is about a 15/20min walk but it’s all a straight road so goes really quickly. The room (Room 7) we stayed in was spotless and it was lovely and warm considering we had snow fall.

We really liked the warmth and comfort of our room, the big spa bath, the big round bed and the views from our room which was room number 2 in the house. We also appreciated the little espresso machine in our room as we like to start the day with a coffee. There is a level of outdated tackiness but if you like a bit of kitsch then you are in the right place. In room number 2 it really worked. The place feels intimate, and it feels unpretentious because it is family run, and everyone is very friendly. The location is great for anyone who comes by train and doesn't drive. It's a good base to be in to explore the area by bus.

We strongly feel that this hotel should be advertised as 4 stars. When I book 5 stars then I really expect 5 stars because I hardly ever treat myself to such things. The hotel is good but it is not exceptional. We went to eat in other places when the restaurant was shut which were also 5 star hotels and there was a noticeable difference in the same sort of price range when it comes to attention to detail and going the extra mile. We feel like it's resting a bit on the good location it is in. It's the already described outdated design (which definitely also depends on taste), but also because the general level to detail that is missing. The breakfast is good, hash browns are missing off the full English plate and the thin slices of toast don't really make up for it. The coffee in the cafetière is not great and one has to pay extra to get a decent latte served which I would expect to be included in a 5 star hotel, luckily we had the little espresso machine in our room.

Just returned from a lovely chilled weekend at the Applegarth. We had the Popper Hot Tub suite which is modern, spacious and comfortable. The bathroom is massive which included walk in shower, large bath including a TV screen. Bedroom area also spacious with a sep small lounge area. Mood light setting options throughout. The hot tub area is completely private with a patio garden area which would be lovely in the summer. Breakfast excellent various options all served by the welcoming staff. Ideal location at the top end of Windermere which allows for a nice walk down to Bo'ness end. All in all a nice weekend break. Would recommend.

Only one small gripe was the cocktail I had. Didn't think this was of standard to charge 12quid in comparison to the cocktails made elsewhere for the same cost but we did go during happy hour but tasted pre made rather than a fresh mojito.

A special mention to Ella who served us at breakfast. She was very welcoming with a smiling face and ensured we had what we needed and ordered. The breakfast actually was excellent, really set us up for the day ahead. Everybody we came into contact with staff wise at hotel was very professional.

Only negative comment was the lack of a plug socket near any of the mirrors to dry/do hair. Apart from this the room was extremely cosy comfortable and beautifully decorated.

Lovely old building with stained glass windows and wooden panelling which is well maintained with tasteful new decor and furnishings. The room was spacious with a separate sitting area. A good breakfast was included with plenty of choice. On site parking is available.

Only suggestions as we were very happy with our stay. It would have been better to have the TV in the sitting area rather than the bedroom as we had to sit on the bed to watch TV when there was a separate sitting area which would have been a better location. There wasn’t much drawer space which is a shame as there was plenty of room for a small set of drawers or a shelf within the wardrobe. There was plenty of hanging space in the wardrobe.

Colourful decor not to everyone’s taste. Tea and coffee facilities precariously balanced on a small tray. Might be better on a shelf in one side of the wardrobe? No plug sockets near mirror to style hair. Cream carpet with nowhere to put potentially muddy boots. Disappointing scrambled eggs with breakfast. Check out at 10.30 am half an hour too early!

The property was beautiful in a reserved old building style. The breakfast room/dining room was gorgeous and the furnishings were stunning. Staff were lovely. It was just a few hundred metres to the Windermere strip shops, had private off road parking and the £3pp each way bus to Bowness where the lake cruises leave from was only a couple of hundred metres away. Breakfast was great and the staff very helpful with the luggage.

A lift would be fantastic but retro/fitting old buildings is not possible.

Loved the decor very high spec fixtures and furnishings. very comfortable throughout the restaurant and lounge areas friendly obliging owner's and staff . It's hard to find fault . Breakfast was exceptional, plenty of choice food of a very high standard, all cooked to order . Our room was slightly smaller than anticipated but still very comfortable. Cleanliness and food. Design of the en-suite was more style than substance, obviously very expensively installed but with some design faults. Shower was excellent, and very useful shaving mirror. False toilet flushing buttons in addition to the ones that worked! Why?

Poor customer service by management. Blamed Booking.com for errors in the description of the room, but surely the description would have been provided to Booking.com by the hotel management. Room 4 was described as having a mountain view AND a garden view. The "garden view" was actually a view of the car parks, and the management admitted they did not have a garden. The dressing table mirror was too low to be of practicable use and could not be adjusted. The wash basin in the en-suite was very low and of such a design that there was nowhere to position used soap. When the taps were used the basin deflected the stream of water over the edges onto the surround.
