The bedroom was quaint and cute, and clean.
No one picked up the phone on the number the hotel listed off hours, at their sister location. This is why I prefer not to stay again unless they can have someone able to pick up the phone on staff. Also, the bathroom smells dewy. They need better ventilation in the "shared bathrooms", particularly on the 3rd floor where I stayed.

poor breakfast. Arrived for the complementary breakfast at 8.45am. No hot water, coffee or scrambled eggs. Just two pieces of toast and two strips of cold bacon. No condiments to add to the toast except butter. I mentioned it to the waitress but only percolated coffee arrived over the following 20 minutes.
The lift was broken down for four days so the hike up and down the stairs on a dicky knee wasn’t much fun.

Requires valet parking at a nearby parking lot which is very expensive. The parking lot across the road does not allow in and out privileges, so had to choose a parking lot about 2 blocks away. Just for awareness. Not the fault of the hotel.

The cat! And the elevator! Just unique features that make this place that much more memorable.
The location is good to.access pt and several landmarks. However, being in the middle of the city is noisy despite the insulation in the windows... if you are anything like me and my husband, you'll be too tired to care.. ?

Central location, close to Union Square and the cable car stop. For those who enjoy walking, you can easily reach Chinatown, Little Italy, and even the Pier 39 area (about an hour's walk). There are various restaurants and a supermarket around the hotel.
Breakfast is served in the hotel next door, with eggs and bacon, crispbread, bagels and jam, coffee, and juices. Very nice atmosphere and plenty of food.
The staff was friendly and ready to help, really appreciated their suggestions and help! Shout out to the lovely hotel cat who welcomes you on arrival.

This hotel was awesome. Very comfortable. We had an issue with the ceiling fan. They attempted to fix it & then just changed us to the room next door. Very quiet. Very well decorated. We liked the parlor area with the mini fridge & fireplace. Old lift was so cool & beloved the hotel cat. Would absolutely stay here again.
We had to wait for staff to come from sister hotel but they were quick.

The location is a positive. You can walk to Union Square and there are lots of food options. The room was clean.
It’s a very old building with an antique elevator. There are no refrigerators in the room. You have to walk down the street for a mediocre breakfast. Of course, you’re paying a lot of extra money to park your car.

The location is absolutely great next to Chinatown and the city center with a lot of restaurants, shops and cafes etc nearby. Old building but good maintained with a nice old flair, you can really feel that it is over 100 years old. The paid parking is across the street, I used valet for 3 days and booking a good rate via app in advance. Coffe and hot chocolate for free in the lobby also a nice thing.
Breakfast is served in the hotel nearby and the whole arrangement definitely needs improvement. Out of 3 times only once it was okay, both other it was so crowded that we had to wait standing near the tables... Once we got the free one I had to clean it and bring the dishes away since the service staff was not around. The food ran out and was not topped up on time, so it was pretty messy.
I would book it without breakfast next time not to spoil the whole experience.

The room was very clean. My room was in the back of the building and it was very quiet (considering it's in the middle of the city). The staff was friendly. You can easily get tea or coffee all day or night in the lobby. And it's a great location in a safe area, with a grocery store just a block away. I would have given this place all 10s if it weren't for the bathtub issue.
Taking a shower is a life-threatening task. The bathtub is curved on the bottom rather than flat (like all modern American tubs) and is extremely slippery. The danger could be easily reduced by providing a rubber mat, but they don't. Note to future customers: Ask the front desk for an extra towel, and use the extra towel as a mat inside the tub - it might save you from serious injury or death.

The hotel does not have a parking as an amenity, the parking is across the road and 40 EURs per night, which was written at the bottom of the screen in small letters, and so we had to spend way more on our stay then expected, to park overnight.

We liked it! It’s cute, charming, and provides a fun experience of living in a true Edwardian-style home - you’ll feel like you’re in the early 1900s SF. Location is convenient and walkable (if you don’t mind some inclines). Friendly staff.
We went to breakfast at the sister hotel around 9am, and it was a bit messy. It was hard to find a clean, available table (the only tables without people had dirty dishes from previous guests) and we had to ask for clean plates and food (trays were empty). The food was generally good, so perhaps you’ll have a better experience if you go on the earlier side.

Our room was lovely, a king with bathroom. I am not sure about temperature regulating but we were very cold and then realized the windows were open.
The breakfast at the sister hotel down the street was sufficient though it seemed that only one person was working...clearing tables, bringing out additional food, dishes, etc. so there was a wait for each. No problems, just a remark.
I was worried about what the hotel would be like but it was charming because of its antique elevator, no two rooms alike, etc. the young people working the desk were very accommodating by storing our luggage until checkin time and good at checkout.
First impression is very important. That being said, I would suggest washing and polishing the entry steps so new guests get a better feeling how clean the inside might be!

The Victorian look was very charming and as advertised. Our room fit the requested 3 persons and was clean, but I was surprised it did not have its own bathroom. Your employees very professional and helpful.
It was not advertised that it would be a community bathroom. Our room was located in the basement so the pipes would make a banging noise when in use. We had the fortunate incident of being locked out because the lock was broken, short inconvenience before a locksmith was called to fix.

The Golden Gate Hotel has terrific, old-school but well-maintained ambience. The location is great (just 5min from Chinatown, 10min from Union), and the price-point is too. For travelers that want to get away from the cold, modern hotel feel, this is the perfect place. Breakfast is served two doors down, with GGH hosting afternoon tea — both are great options for kicking off your day. Staff is warm and helpful, and of course who can forget the resident cat, who will warm up to you after a night or two.
If you arrive after hours, you’ll want to stop by the Cornell (their partner hotel) first. This could have been better communicated.

Fantastic stay at Golden Gate Hotel. Since I checked in later (around 8pm-9pm if I remember correctly), I had to pick up the keys from another location down the street, about a 1 minute walk. The place itself felt like a movie, it's an older building but elegant. The room was comfortable, clean, good closet space, solid wifi, just what I needed for one night. My work location was only a 10 minute walk. There's a convenience store across the street, couple bars if that's your thing (I don't drink), safe area. I found free 2 hour street parking a half block away, metering started at 8am. My morning work thing was taking longer so I requested and obtained a later check in - much appreciated! I saw front desk staff in the morning, she was friendly. Great price considering the location. I'd stay here again.
Would've preferred for the bathroom to be in the room, it's in the hallway. Not a big deal, there was only one instance where I had to wait for someone else to finish using it.

The hotel's physical condition falls short of its online representation, appearing somewhat worn and in need of maintenance. Our accommodations were plagued by unpleasant odors, and the shared bathroom facilities proved inconvenient given the occupancy numbers. I experienced personal discomfort and developed skin irritation. There is no is A/C or heater but for February visit its hot in the room an they have electric fan. There’s a telephone that doesnt work too. With the hotel’s pricing, I had anticipated a more comfortable stay; nonetheless, the location seemed to justify the cost. Honestly, I chose to book the hotel primarily due to its location and the nostalgic appeal it holds for living like a local. Ultimately, the hotel's overall experience failed to meet my expectations. In the picture shown is the stairs we climbed up and down every day so they could’ve really clean it a bit.

The Golden Gate Hotel is a cozy little place in a great location. We live in a Victorian house, so this felt just like home. The elevator is too cool and we enjoyed all the vintage pictures. And take the stairs at least once to see all the great old photos. Close to some good restaurants (Bouche and Roxanne's for instance). Two steep blocks uphill to The Masonic. Parking right across the street. We have stayed previously at the Fairmont and Mark Hopkins and we now prefer this place. Real old San Francisco feel.
