The style and the staff.
You pay quite some money so you expect something in return. The rooms are afwfully small, look old and have some cracks and unfinished areas here and there. The bathroom is even smaller, hard to shower when the knobs are taking half of the space! The shower gel wasn’t filled up, there is mold and dust all over the place. Small, old and smelly rooms…

The shower was tiny, my partner couldn't raise his arms in it and he is not the largest of men.
Parking! The website said parkingavailable but didn't mention the additional cost until scrolling further down - something I discovered after my visit. Also, this was dependent on availability and would have been problematic if full up. We ended up parking on the road overnight and left at just before 9am earlier than we,d planned. Costs and availability need to be mentioned in the initial part of website. Had we known it wasn't included we wouldn't have booked this hotel as we were on a budget break.

Amazing experience, from start to finish. The hotel is very well decorated which alone is worth a visit. The rooms are spacious, clean and very comfortable. The hotel is located close enough to the center of La Rochelle (5' walk) but conveniently distant to be quiet and tranquil. The private parking is a big plus in La Rochelle. The staff are all very kind and attentive. The breakfast was also a highlight - with fresh fruit and amazing local brioche (gache)! We loved La Rochelle and Hotel Francois 1er, we will certainly be back!

Ideally situated in a quiet street but close to port, cafes & restaurants and local market. Loved all the pop art and memorabilia on the walls. The staff were very friendly and helpful; in fact, when we arrived by car in La Rochelle we couldn’t get to the hotel due to changing roadworks, despite following the direction instructions. As such, we had to park in a car park nearby and walk to the hotel but a member of staff came with me back to the car park to direct me back to the hotel car park.
Bedroom and en suite/shower were very small. There was also a strange smell in the room - not sure if it was from building work - which was a bit overpowering on entering. Kept the window open whilst we were there but closed it when we went out so smell was back when we returned.

The Hotel is in the very heart of the city.
Not a good place to stay even if you have a good offer.
We booked the cheapest room available to stay over night in town.
The room had distinctive smell of chemicals - it's either cleaning the mold, or killing the bugs - one of the two. Neither one is nice. We though the smell will be gone with the window open - nope it stayed through the night, causing the headache in the morning (slept with the windows open). The room was dirty - hairs all around the shower. And some signs of somebody's biological activity on the wall - which I would prefer to not know about (see the photo).
The shower cabin was very small. I'm not a big guy, but it was a real challenge to have shower inside the cabin - imagine when you drop a shampoo and not able to pick it up just because the cabin is so small you have no space to bend. And yes, the flow of water is very weak, if you have a long hair this would be hard to wash them.
I wouldn't come there again even if the room would be twice as cheap.

We did extend for one night our stay and we were charged more for the same room. This is because for the extra night we booked directly with the hotel and not booking . com, which at the time it gave us a discounted rate.

Wonderful hotel. Beautiful room. It was so spacious and the bed was large. There was also a fan in each room, which we appreciated. Great staff, too. They spoke English when our French wasn't getting us there, lol, and even quickly found a bag we had left behind so we didn't miss our train.

The location was absolutely fantastic! The directions were very helpful. Although the room was small, the bathroom was a great size, shower was fantastic with lots of hot water, bed was super comfortable. The view of the Jim Morrison mural from our window was unexpected - we loved all the art and neat decor throughout. The morning brunch was top rate and well worth the price. The secure parking was appreciated as well. The staff were the BEST!!! So helpful, friendly and attentive to detail. Highly recommend this boutique hotel.
