Unfortunately I needed to be downtown for an appt. and although downtown LA is absolutely disgusting, smelling of urine and with feces smeared absolutely everywhere you look, and you must look down or you will step in it, the hotel was a decent price compared to other hotels downtown. It felt nice and safe with a hip vibe. I'm not a very hip person but it was kind of charming with a vintage feel. Staff was friendly, check-in was easy. The room is hip and artsy, comfortable bed, vintage but clean except for carpet.

Did I mention downtown LA is absolutely disgusting? It's I've never seen so much sh** in all my life. and I raised two babies. I walked ten minutes to my appt. and the entire walk wreaked of urine. There are working people and students walking around so it felt sort of safe during the day, but there are also a lot of homeless people, people high on drugs, and people screaming and arguing. While I was at my apartment there was screaming out outside in the streets and constant sirens. I could not wait to get out of there. Once you leave downtown LA is nice, beautiful rocky beaches, clean crisp water, mountains. The best thing about LA is driving away from it. The room was fine, but as usual hotel had carpet. For the love of God I will never understand carpet in the US. This is doesn't really exist in other country for obvious reasons. Carpet is a sponge for bacteria that you can never really clean. So naturally the carpet had stains and always carpet has an odor. I only hope, like smoking, it's a disgusting trend that will go away one day because ew. Imagine walking the streets of LA covered in feces and urine and then walking on that carpet. But most hotels will (mindblowing) also have carpet. I didn't even want to walk on it with socks. Still a better price and otherwise clean compared to the expensive hotels that will also have disgusting sponge floors. That's my honest opinion. I'm not holding back because somebody has to say it. Carpet makes zero sense and yes, I'm bitter about it.

Very central close to crypto centre, safe enough. nice rooftop vibe. The hotel itself is great. Definitely book if you on a budget

I'm not used to dormitories so very strange for me personally, nothing to do with the hotel The furniture is very outdated using old bunk beds

Beautiful and unique building, fairly comfortable bed, big room, nice window seat. Central location.

Somewhat noisy, and blinds didn't entirely block street lights, especially the neon flashing taco truck lights. Also would have preferred no carpeting due to allergies. And surrounding streets sometimes didn't feel very safe.

We loved the room that was large and relaxing, the comfortable bed, the restaurant , the rooftop pool and bar, the friendly and helpful staff, the decor and interior design throughout the hotel, housekeeping, and the nice people we met who were also staying there.

Keep in mind that Uber has the wrong address on there app for the Freehand Hotel so you have to type in the real address or use the Freehand Rooftop Bar address called the Broken Shaker (or a not-so-savvy driver will not find the entrance, theyโ€™ll cancel your ride, and youโ€™ll be charged because the driver cancels your ride.

The freehand is one of my favorite staycation spots in DTLA. Beautiful hotel amazing rooftop and location is perfect. My one note of contention in my numerous stays here over the years is the some of the staff need to work on their customer service. In particular there have been more than a couple of the front desk staff that are quite frankly nasty in their demeanor and communication.

Historic. DTLA.

Roommate. She used the bath mat first. No locks for the lockers. Price was $43 for mixed dorm and $96 for all female. What sense does that make? I don't want to share an intimate room with 4 strange men. I don't want to have relations with 4 strange men. Why do they charge extra money a lot of money to preserve your private areas?

Clean room with a comfortable bed, big tv and a fridge. Clean bathroom with a good powerful shower. The rooftop pool was great with good views of the surrounding downtown buildings. The rooftop restaurant was also nice, although a bit expensive compared to other nearby places.

We had a very unsettling experience on our first night, which made us question whether we wanted to continue our stay. As we exited the elevator to return to our room, an individual was lingering in the corridor. He appeared a bit out of it and, as we walked past, he extended his arm and swiped his phone across my partnerโ€™s chest. He then threw a straw at an elderly man walking toward the elevator behind us. A few minutes later, someone attempted to open our room door twice. Looking through the door, we saw it was the same man. We immediately called reception who sent security to our room, they came around 10 minutes later. Security instructed us to remain inside and not open the door while they investigated. We were also told that the CCTV cameras did not cover the area where our room door was located. Over the next hour or so, I contacted reception a few times for updates. We requested to move rooms but were informed the hotel was fully booked that night. We had no idea who this man was, and whether he was even staying at the hotel. After phoning reception again for an update, security returned to confirm the individual had left the building and would be removed from the property if he returned, which reassured us. Although the situation was eventually resolved and security staff were reassuring, the experience itself was very frightening. Not knowing why someone was trying to enter our room left us feeling unsafe. We were going to go back out for food that night but didnโ€™t as we felt afraid. It was also a bit disappointing that we had to repeatedly call reception for updates rather than being proactively kept informed. We had no issues during our second night. However, the surrounding area felt quite run down, with a large number of homelessness, and people lingering around the front entrance.

Even though itโ€™s Downtown I felt quite safe. The walk from the metro station was fine, even after sunset. The guest lounge is very convenientโ€”you can always bring your own food and have dinner there. The staff is excellent.

The rooms are very small and there is a lot of noise. But it is a hostel, so you have to be prepared for that. Earplugs helped me.

The location is incredible, it falls right in LA heart.

When we got there to check in we barely had any information about the hotel, we did not know where the gym was, check out times etc. We stayed 2 days and we did not have any housekeeping. We wished to have fresh towels and a little cleaning but nobody went to our bedroom. The first day I went to the gym it had so much water on the floor that I felt I was in the swimming pool instead and one of the treadmill was not working. (They are 2 in total)

Iโ€™ve styled in freehand New York before and it was a private room and the stay was amazing, thatโ€™s what encouraged me to try the shared rooms my trust in the hotel, unfortunately was terrible the room smelled like dogs room, wasnโ€™t safe at all i kept waking up the entire night because i was worried, the setting part of the room had a lot of alcohol bottles on the table, someone was drinking until he got super drunk and he was with us in the room , i thought these things are prohibited for shared room for safety purposes, two people were trying to have sex for almost two hours they were in the same bed the girl kept telling him to leave and then he insisted to stay so much talk and giggles, super uncomfortable for us .

Nothing in this location, the horrible experience ruined everything for me

Nothing the workers there were very rude. My wife was injured by the hotel elevators. She was walking out, pushing a stroller that had two babies inside of it, and the doors immediately slammed on her and would not let her out. We spoke with the people in the front and there was nothing they were able to do about it. We wrote an incident report and that was that itโ€™s been going on a week already and every time we call to speak with a manager, they say there is no manager available. Worst experience ever and this is definitely getting taken further since thereโ€™s nothing they want to do about it and they keep ignoring us.
