I want to commend the staff for their assistance. The check-in desk clerk was exceptionally helpful and went beyond the call of duty. We were in Portland for medical reasons and it was a stressful time. The restaurant waiters and the parking valets were very professional and helpful. We will stay there again.

This is an old classic hotel. The structure is lovely. If you only stay in a hotel for its appearance, this is a reasonable accommodation.
Currently, though the management's attitude towards all forms of transportation other than automobiles is hostility. This is difficult to tolerate in a society that benefits from diverse citizens getting along, especially in a downtown. Unfortunately, management are actively encouraging cars to obstruct the bicycle lane. I spoke directly with the manager and this attitude leads to conflict. Management's attitude made the stay here unpleasant and a poor value given the cost.

Elegant, pleasant, great staff. Complementary coffee in the lobby. Upbeat atmosphere. Great piano music at the weekend. Superb food. Great bathtub as requested.
The location, because there were a lot of homeless people sleeping outside. This was intimidating for a solo 70 year-old traveller. This affected how much the guest could explore the local area.

Location was good, front lady at reception desk was great and the valet guy was awesome. The entrance and lobby is very grand and beautiful. Ambiance very nice. Staff showed their presence and it showed stood out from other large hotels close by
Just a suggestion. Bedroom could use a full length mirror instead of in the bathroom. And a bathroom fan-vent would be great from the shower humidity

Breakfast included, but the breakfast was not buffet type. We got a restaurant table with a regular menu, I needed to ask the help desk how to request breakfast. They gave me a maximum amount per person, so I needed to adjust the breakfast options to the amount. Complex and outdated process.

The staff at check in were great. It’s in a perfect location for downtown Portland/pearl district fun.
The beds are very stiff and uncomfortable. And the cleanliness was not what it should be. As I was leaving/unplugging my charger I looked down and saw trash, a clump of hair, and a screw all in the corner of the bed frame of my bed. When I showed this to the front desk a picture I took they were just like “oh thanks for letting us know” and didn’t apologize for that.

1. The Hotel needs refurbishment… could be an icon!
2. I didn’t like the unprofessionally dressed desk staff… sloppy, casual, needs a big shake-up! Looked to me like homeless people were in the lobby late at night (with the support of the desk staff)… A hotel is not a place to harbour homeless and illegals… it made us as guests, very uncomfortable!!!

Dinner in the lobby was good and we didn't have to go out during the rainstorm.
We also enjoyed the History Stairway with the excellent photos and Portland trivia. I was happy to see that many president's stayed at The Benson and that 45 was not among them!
Desk staff and restaurant service staff were exceptional.
It was all good. No complaints.

The history of the hotel and the Historic Stairwell with the original marble floors and the photos of Portland's history is wonderful. The lobby with the walnut pillars and walls and crystal chandeliers is beautiful. The room and bedding was quite comfortable and very clean. I also like that we were provided two free bottles of water. Might not be much but not every hotel even offers that for free anymore.
$49 parking is a lot but I think that is pretty standard for Portland. The valets were very nice and pretty quick to bring the card around.

Great location. Food trucks, coffee, music venues all very short walking distance, parking lot was very secure.
We had a booking date mix up and every staff member we spoke to while fixing it was incredibly friendly, patient, knowledgeable, and helpful. Even though I booked through a 3rd party they helped every step of the way. I would definitely stay again just because of how exceptional the staff was.
The only downside was the thin walls (expected in an older building.) So we were woken up several times because of street traffic, a neighbor talking loudly on their phone, and people talking in the halls. The sound really travels. So if you are a light sleeper pack earplugs just in case.
We called front desk about the especially loud neighbor and it was remedied very quickly.

I have stayed at this hotel some 15x although it had been awhile. I knew some of the rooms were small but I knew that I wanted an outer view so paid for a premium double Queen room which should have had a view and even a corner view per their website, and I paid a premium for it.
There was no bellman when I arrived after 15 hours of travel so I went directly to the room to discover it was a small king room with a view facing into the mechanicals of the building. There was barely enough room to open my one suitcase and carry-on - quite claustrophobic especially for 2 people.
I also learned room service stops at 10pm and they have no vending machines whatsoever so I had to walk 5 blocks through two lit up police cars to get a coke.
I dealt with it because of my sheer exhaustion from traveling but I will probably never come back again.

The hidden historical photography tour in the old stairwell was amazing. Beautiful historical hotel with great service. Breakfast was nice with choices. Staff was excellent.
We checked in on the day the world had the Microsoft meltdown so the check-in was tricky. We got a nice room on top floor and when we went there it was occupied. Pretty awkward. Not their fault so no big deal and staff handled it very well.
