The location is great, very close to the Downtown area. It's great to have a free breakfast included. The staff were friendly and helpful. The hotel has a lot of charm.
There is an overall feeling of the building being old and a bit run down. So better to avoid if you're into fresh and modern. Otherwise, perfect for a short stay in SF.

What a GEM of a property in a centrally located area of the City. The room was charming, quiet, and well appointed. The breakfast was generous - and offered in a VERY cozy, charming area of an equally unique, delightful property next door. The to go cups are large (thank YOU!), and they serve coffee, decaf , hot cocoa and Numi teas all day/night for your convenience. They also offer a very nice wine and 'nibbles' (cheese, grapes, crackers) each evening. I cannot say enough good things about this property and we will definitely return. We have already told our friends who live in the Bay Area and just outside of it about Petite Auberge as it's affordable, great value for the dollar, charming (not just another giant, impersonal hotel) and a real gem - this is the ONLY place (or their sister property, White Swan) when we come back to the City.
There was nothing not to like. It was really a terrific property. It's the only place we will stay from now on.

We were very happy with hotel especially considering the great pricing. The room was small but it felt cozy, especially with fireplace. And although the furniture felt a little outdated the bed was super comfortable. The bathroom was simple, but well designed and it felt clean. Also, there was unlimited access to free water bottles, sparkling water, and coffee, along with free breakfast and 5pm snack w/ wine and the location was easy walking distance to lots of restaurants and union square.

Floors creaky and allow for sound from other rooms to carry easily to the floor below or next room over. Elevator is old fashioned and a bit annoying to have to open and close manually, especially when moving luggage. The lack of a ramp or elevator to the lobby meant I had to carry my luggage up a set of stairs to get into the building to check in.

If you are truly interested in an older style hotel, this will work well for you. Mattress was comfy (not memory foam, thank goodness), room had an armoire for clothes, and the corner cozy queen room had a (small) bathtub. Breakfast was weirdly bad, despite good options on paper (oats were gluey, "pastries" were just mid croissants and muffins); coffee was somewhat weak. Wine and cheese were unremarkable, as well, but the service was good.
It is somewhat annoying to go to White Swan for breakfast. Location is good--close to Nob Hill, Chinatown, and Union Square.

Cozy boutique hotel with complimentary services like breakfast and a glass of wine. The fireplaces give the hotel a very homely feel and the staff was excellent.
The walls were thin which meant you could hear other guests arriving back at the hotel. There was however not much noise from the surrounding area, and as there are only a few rooms it was in my opinion only midly inconvenient.

People with mobility issues should know that there are about 10 marble stairs to traverse to enter and exit.

We had a wonderful stay at this hotel. We absolutely loved the antique charm and character of the building. We chose a room with a fireplace, which made the experience even more cozy and enjoyable.
The 24/7 tea and coffee area in the basement was a lovely touch and very convenient. The location was also excellent — just a short walking distance to Union Square, which made exploring the city very easy.
The valet service was a bit expensive, but in a city like San Francisco, where car safety can be a concern, it gave us real peace of mind.
The hotel staff were incredibly warm, friendly, and helpful throughout our stay. As a small suggestion, disposable slippers in the rooms would have been appreciated, and adding a wider variety of cheeses at breakfast could make the experience even better.
Overall, we had a very enjoyable stay and would happily return. Thank you for everything.

We had a truly relaxing and charming stay in Room 46. The soft mattress made for an excellent night’s sleep, and the atmospheric gas fireplace added a cozy, old-world ambiance—though it’s worth noting it doesn’t provide much actual warmth.
The room itself had a lovely, classic chintz charm, and the sunken bath was a real highlight—perfect for unwinding after a long day. Complimentary bottled still and sparkling water was a thoughtful touch and much appreciated.
The location was also a major plus—an excellent base for exploring the city. We felt safe throughout our stay, and it’s conveniently near Union Square, with easy access to trolleys and the vintage cable cars, making it simple to get around and head down to the pier.
The front desk staff were friendly and helpful throughout our stay, and breakfast was good—nothing lavish, but satisfying, with particularly excellent pastries.
Overall, a beautiful and restful stay with plenty of charm. We would definitely recommend it and would happily return.
The only downside was some noise from guests in the room above; we could hear noticeable rumbling at times. Because of this, we’d likely request a room on the top 5th floor next time for a quieter experience.

Great character, fire place in the bed room for those chilly evenings, helpful staff and good location. Clean room with good amenities (coffee etc downstairs).
A little walk to the main transport routes. Weirdly had the sink outside the bathroom, in the main room (not for everyone). Older building with some squeaky floors, got a little disturbed by late arrivals and early departures from the floor above. A small fridge in the room would have been nice.

Room was well appointed and comfortable. Continental breakfast was great with ample selection. Staff were friendly and helpful. Lounge areas at Petite Auberge and the White Swan next door were comfy with all-day tea and coffee, bottled water and mineral water.
Location was excellent with easy access using Muni day pass ( for cable car, bus and train) to downtown, Fisherman’s Wharf and further afield to Golden Gate Bridge and elsewhere.

The staff was very friendly and had a great vibe.
The hotel smells old and is in a significant state of disrepair. All the fabrics on the chairs and armchairs are stained, and the mattresses are worn out — whenever one person moves, the whole bed shakes and wakes up the other person.
The breakfast has no cheese, cold cuts, or scrambled eggs. The price-quality ratio is very poor. It is not what is shown in the photos. There is no one at the reception desk; you have to go find someone at another hotel 20 meters away.
